Ben DeMoras

Ben is a first-year student in Entomology, Department of Entomology, Cornell University, Ithaca.  He is seeking to improve knowledge and opportunities regarding organic beekeeping in the USA.  Ben’s goal is to provide empirical data to the USDA on the foraging patterns and pesticide exposure of organically managed colonies placed on organic farms. Use these results to lobby for the formal adoption of organic apiculture standards, leading to economic benefits for beekeepers.  He is working on a project to better define and expand organic beekeeping and organic honey certification in the USA. Tracking honey bee foraging on organic farms will provide evidence the USDA needs to reduce the prohibitive 6.4 km. (4 mi.) minimum distance from potential sources of synthetic pesticide exposure.
